I want to be able to join in a pick-up game. Not worry about
getting a black eye while dribbling down the field. (see disclaimer – not pretty;)
I want to teach Marley healthy habits by example. Not just
eating habits – but lifestyle habits. I’m starting with me and my vice – food.
I want to do what I want and not hide behind my weight. Too many
of these examples… I’m not going to start.
I want to be able to play with Marley (and future kids) on
the floor and outside. I want to play the airplane game with them and throw
them in the pool and jog with them during their fun runs.
Ugh – that last one got me crying. I ran a 5k when Marley
was 4 months old. I got to run it with my 8 year old niece. She loves running
and has won quite a few local races (yes, even against the boys – girl power!).
While I certainly wasn’t in any kind of shape, other than ‘round’, I found myself
jogging along side her and talking her through each obstacle. By the end of the
race I was shouting to her to keep going and make a sprint to the finish. I won’t
lie – she left my side at that point and I was too tired to keep up with her
sprint. Those last few feet, Ben stepped up (he was always pretty close by
pushing the stroller) – this was my turn to be coachedJ
As we were driving home, we were talking about the run in
general. Ben told me about when he and his siblings were growing up how his dad
would coach them through their runs. Breathing techniques, focusing on your
stride, keeping your head up, etc. I love that. I already know that Ben can do that.
But I want to do it too.
I want to coach Marley’s soccer team. And volleyball team.
And basketball team.
I want to LIKE to shop for ‘my style’ of clothes. This is related
to ‘hiding behind my weight’ mentioned above. I think I have style - I just blame
my weight for not being able to pull it off. – Haha! Pun NOT intended, but
still funny and applicableJ
I think that’s about it. Obviously there are more reasons
but these will be my core motivation to drop –and keep off – these 45 pounds.
Wish me luck!
Right there with you! But I also hope we as women embrace the shape shifting of our bodies in these child-bearing years and are patient and loving to our bodies for what miracles they are. Old habits and thought patterns die hard but I've been reading some interesting books lately about how we can mindfully change the messaging and storytelling in our minds to be more affirming. They're pretty amazing, these bodies of ours! "My Stroke of Insight" is a good one and so is "Daring Greatly."
ReplyDeleteVery awesome! I completely agree with all of those and have been struggling since college to adopt healthier eating habits. I have also read some books to educate myself on healthy living and to change my mindset and agree with Tracie, they are probably some of my best tools along with a supportive husband. I'm so much further along than I was even just a few years ago and you're blog post is great motivation to keep it up! I can feel I'm getting there slowly but surely! Good luck on your journey. I'm excited to read about it!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree Tracie. I have actually always struggled with healthy habits and felt the best when I was pregnant because I started taking better care of myself, for the baby. It gave me a little taste of how much more comfortable I was, doing the things that I love, when I was taking better care of myself. It's definitely more than just a physical issue, and it's about more than the pounds. This journey of mine is all about the joys that I'm gaining as I try to better myself physically and emotionally. I've got to break those old comfort habits to make room for the greater joys in life.
